Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a process heavily reliant on data. In an LCA project, data collected directly from specific operations or processes in the field are referred to as primary data. Meanwhile, data sourced from external databases, which provide information on general processes or materials, are known as secondary data.
In most routine LCA studies, the majority of the total data utilized consists of secondary data. These datasets are indispensable for conducting LCA studies, as they provide the foundational information necessary for analysis. Without secondary data, performing an LCA would be nearly impossible.
Despite their critical role in reducing project costs and streamlining processes, the quality and reliability of secondary data significantly influence the accuracy and credibility of the LCA results. As such, the development and maintenance of robust, high-quality databases are essential for ensuring meaningful and actionable LCA outcomes.
